(In Memoriam)
To Mother

by Velma M. Carlson

I never thought that life could be so empty
   That I could feel so much alone;
I didn’t know how sad I’d be
   Without you.
Just think of  you, no matter where I
   Roam.
I went to Church this morning
   Very early.
And sat alone within my favorite
   Pew.
It wasn’t long, but you were
   There beside me;
I couldn’t see, but still, somehow
   I knew.
I knelt, and said a prayer just
   As always.
The Cross was shining like  ‘twas
   Purest gold;
I listened to the sermon and the
   Singing
About the sweetest story ever
   Told.
And then my heart just seemed
   To fill with sadness.
My eyes with tears which I could not
   Control.
I realized then that you were gone
   Very soul.
I knew I had to weep; my heart was
   Breaking.
And as I prayed to God from
   Up above –
Please, take care of Mother, while
   She’s sleeping;
And may the angels guide the one
   We love

A simile is as easy as pie, but a metaphor is a piece of cake!
