Senior Citizens
by Velma M. Carlson

I go to Senior Citizens and much to my surprise
I don’t feel old, I’ll tell you
Because I’m laughing still inside.
I could not find a place to sit.
The cups were all turned upside down
And they don’t move one little bit.
“You can’t sit here, my friend may come
And you are in her place.
Maybe you could go to the next table.”
Oh yes, maybe I could beat the race!
So, I hurry to the next one, thinking
I was there to stay,
When a voice in back of me says
“I always sit here every day.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’ll look for another,”
I answered as politely as I could
And again, I found an empty place
Not knowing if I really should.
I turned my cup the right side up
With knife and fork inside.
Didn’t know how long I’d stay there
But I’ll take it in my stride.
If they want my seat that badly,
I’ll gladly give it up to please,
And take another chance if need be
If another I should see.
After all, we are not children.
Can’t we take another seat?
And greet each other with a smile
As we al
l sit down to eat?
So many times we meet old friends
And we are as happy as can be.
It’s nice to sit and chat awhile –
So it’s up to you and me.

A simile is as easy as pie, but a metaphor is a piece of cake!
