Sleight of Hand
(A Villanelle)
by Nancy Ness

  Our lives could be just as we’ve planned;
Each day’s forecast our own devise
If we were granted Sleight of Hand.

  Divergency we’d not withstand
In staid agenda naught reprise
Our lives could be just as we’ve planned

  Exigency meets our command
Dare not eschew nor compromise
If we are granted Sleight of Hand

  Such stringency invites remand
Contentious staunch sinew belies
Our lives shan’t be just as we’ve planned

  Felicity in fain so grand
In dreams undoffed we’ll fantasize
If we are granted Sleight of Hand

Existence swept as grain of sand
Fulfillment appetence descries
Our lives shan’t be just as we’ve planned
If we are granted Sleight of Hand

A simile is as easy as pie, but a metaphor is a piece of cake!
