Songs My Mother
Used to Sing

by Velma M. Carlson

The songs my mother used to sing
I don’t forget and love to tell.
It seems they were all so beautiful!
She remembered them so well.
Songs that she sang were pretty ones
With tear drops in her eyes.
They must have meant a lot to her
Because, sometimes she used to cry.
She used to hold me in her arms
When I was very young.
I loved to listen to her voice
As she sang them one by one.
“Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” always
Seemed so real to me
Her voice was low and very soft.
And as sweet as it could be.
In the “Sweet bye-bye” seemed to be
Her favorite hymn.
It seemed she used to sing it more;
Of how someday she’d be with Him.
The songs my mother used to sing were
Very dear to me.
I think of her as the years go by
She is very dear, you see.
So
when I hear those old, old songs,
Especially the hymns,
My mind goes back to my younger days
And the songs she used to sing.

A simile is as easy as pie, but a metaphor is a piece of cake!
