Tell Me Why
by Velma M. Carlson

Why must I be so lonely? Why do I weep
And mourn?
Why does my heart keep aching? Why
Am I so forlorn?
I know she live a long, long life,
And her work on earth was done.
But why, o tell me why I’m sad
With the setting of the sun.
The birds that sing in the morning,
The stars that shine in the sky
The flowers that grow in the garden
The moon that shines up high
There is something missing in all
Of them.
The things she loved so dear
Morning glories beside the wall,
Which she planted every year.
The old wheelbarrow at the
Side of her house was beautiful
To see
And the window box with
Clinging vines bring back
“Sweet Memories”
I see her by the window
Sitting in her old armchair
With her purple shawl around her,
The sunlight shining through
Her hair.
She loved her bed of violets, which
Were thick around the wall
The goldenrod that blooms in the Fall.
She would so often tell
‘When you see it blooming
It’s a flower that I love.  It grows
So beautifully.”
And so, Dear God, forgive me if
I have a selfish heart.
It’s just because I loved her so
That it’s so hard to part.
I know you called her home to rest
In that City rich and fair.
Someday I know we’ll understand
That Jesus knows and cares

A simile is as easy as pie, but a metaphor is a piece of cake!
